"Breaking Up Is Hard To Do," a musical by Neil Sedaka, will be performed by Memorial's own theatre performers on April 3, 4, and 5. It will be a show to remember in more ways than one because it has the moves and grooves of Neil Sedaka on its side.
Neil Sedaka is an American pop singer, pianist, and songwriter of the late 1950's until about the 1970's. He wrote "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" along with some other hits "Love Will Keep Us Together," "Stupid Cupid," and "Where the Boys Are." Sedaka also has appeared on American Idol as a guest judge.
Mrs. Edmondson is hoping that Sedaka could come to Evansville for the show's high school world premiere, meaning no other high school has ever performed this show. But more realistically she hopes for a letter or a personal video clip from the musician.
The show is coming along; however, progress has been hindered by the plethora of snow days Memorial has encountered. Due to the snow, the performers have had to work a faster pace and work harder. They have been putting in extra practices and pushing through. All those extra practices put more personal responsibility on the performers, but Mrs. Edmondson reports, "They are finally stepping up and working through it." It is a difficult feat for the performers to learn lines, choreography, and music all at the same time.
The dancing in the show is "hard core but cool," according to junior Emily Durchholz. On a scale of one to ten (ten being the most difficult), she would rate it as a 6.5. Most of the girl dancers have had previous experience in dancing before. With the guys, not so much, but they are hanging in there. In addition to the dancing, another difficulty, according to Durchholz, is the pants. "The pants are high but I haven't danced in them yet, so I don't know how that will be."
"Breaking Up is Hard to Do" will soon be premiering at [our] very own Memorial High School. It should be a good show with neat tunes, fun choreography, and great performers. Check out the website for the musical at http://mhs.evansville.net/theatre!
