Health, Drivers Ed, and Physical Education
Secondary
Physical Education I- Level II
One Semester, Grade 9
Prerequisites: None
This
co-educational course is designed to introduce the student to basic skills and
rules of different sports such as soccer, volleyball, softball, and basketball.
Individual activities provide an opportunity for challenge and
self-improvement. Physical fitness
is emphasized. This course can be adapted or modified to meet the individual
needs of students with disabilities. Materials:
gym suit to be purchased at bookstore, white socks, and gym shoes (sweat
suit optional). Possible field trips
include sand volleyball, tennis and bowling.
There is not a fee for sand volleyball and tennis; however, there is a
fee for bowling per session which includes two-three games and shoe rental.
The expected amount depends on the number of sessions but will range from
$20.00-25.00. Special Fee: $4 lock
replacement fee.
This course now carries 1 credit and the grade for this course is averaged into
the student's GPA. PLEASE
NOTE: It is highly recommended that
students take this course as ninth graders.
It may be delayed to tenth grade if necessary; however, approval of the
Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction is required.
One Semester, Grade 10
Prerequisites: Secondary Physical Education I
This
co-educational course is designed to develop the same skills as Secondary
Physical Education I, but to a higher degree of proficiency.
Team activities for the second year include tag football, volleyball,
basketball, volley tennis, pickleball, softball, and speedball.
Individual activities include badminton, tennis, and paddleball. This
course can be adapted or modified to meet the individual needs of students with
disabilities. Materials: gym suit to
be purchased at bookstore, white socks, and gym shoes (sweat suit optional).
Possible field trips include sand volleyball, tennis and bowling.
There is not a fee for sand volleyball or tennis; however, there is a fee
for bowling per session which includes two-three games and shoe rental.
The exact amount depends on the number of sessions but will range from
$20.00 - $25.00. There is the
possibility of a six-week Taekwondo and self-defense class for the female PE
classes, which costs $5.00 per class. At
the end of the classes the girls will be able to test for their orange belt and
leave with basic self-defense tactics. Special
Fee: $4 lock replacement fee.

One Semester, Grade 10
Prerequisites: None
This
course provides a detailed study of health problems in order to explain the WHY,
HOW, and WHAT of maintaining good health. The
course includes the major content areas in a planned, sequential, comprehensive
health education curriculum as expressed in the Indiana Health Education
Proficiency Guide: (1) Growth and Development; (2) Mental and Emotional Health;
(3) Community and Environmental Health; (4) Nutrition; (5) Family Life
Education; (6) Consumer Health; (7) Personal Health; (8) Alcohol, Tobacco, and
Other Drugs Education; (9) Intentional and Unintentional Injury; and (10) Health
Promotion and Disease Prevention. The course emphasizes moderation as a key to
maintaining sound health practices. Some
of the wide range of careers available in the health field will also be
explored.
Driver
Education- Level II
One Semester, Grades 10-12
Prerequisites: The student must possess a certified driver education permit from
the Indiana Motor Vehicle Bureau and must be at least 15 years of age when
entering the course.
Students residing in
This
course is a combination of driver education and alcohol education.
DRIVER EDUCATION:
This portion of the course will include a minimum of thirty (30) hours of
classroom instruction and six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.
The purpose of this area of the course is to impart basic knowledge and
skills needed in the proper operation of an automobile.
It intends to give the student an understanding of the practical
operation, function, and maintenance of the vehicle.
ALCOHOL EDUCATION:
Approximately two weeks will be used to study the effects of alcohol on
the human body, especially the results of drinking and driving.
Special Fee: There is a fee
for behind-the-wheel instruction.
Grades 11-12
Weight
Training And Fitness- Level II
One Semester, Grades 11-12
Prerequisites: Physical Education I and II
This
co-educational course is for the motivated student willing to work to improve
his or her fitness level by weight training and physical activity.
A journal/weight room journal will be required and will cover the basics
of nutrition and the components of fitness.
The objective of the class is to instill lifelong fitness and nutrition
goals for each individual. The
students will participate in weight training for strength improvements, aerobic
activity for cardiovascular endurance, stretching exercises for flexibility, and
nutrition and fitness for body composition. Note:
This course carries one (1) credit per semester and does count toward
GPA.
Lifetime
Sports And Fitness- Level I
One Semester, Grades 11-12
Prerequisites: Physical Education I and II
This
co-educational course provides an opportunity for more skill development of the
activities introduced in Physical Education 1 and 2.
The areas covered include tag football, basketball, weight training,
bowling, softball, tennis, volleyball, ping-pong, pickle-ball, and golf.
Emphasis will also be placed on exercise and good overall physical
fitness, through daily stretching routines and cardiovascular workouts.
Special Fee: $4 lock
replacement fee. Additional fees may
be charged for field trips or out-of-school activities.
This
course carries ˝ credit per semester and does not count toward GPA.
As a level I course, it will not count toward the Academic Honor
Diploma’s 52 required credits.
