Staff Why Take a Foreign Language? The Classes Course Descriptions Extracurricular

Classes

The Following Foreign Language Classes are Offered at Memorial:

French: 1, 2, 3*, and AP French*
German: 1, 2, 3, and 4
Spanish: 1A, 1B, 1, 2, 3*, and AP Spanish*

*Note: French 3 and AP French/Spanish 3 and AP Spanish are dual credit
classes in which students have the opportunity to earn university credit through
the University of Evansville.

Prerequisites

For a 1st year language course:

1. An English grade of C+ (3) or above: French 1, German 1, Spanish 1
An English grade of C (2) or D (1): Spanish 1A

2. A basic working knowledge of English grammar:
a. strong word skills
b. ability to associate (audio-lingual-visual)
c. ability to grasp grammatical concepts and to apply them logically in sentence development.

3. Good communication skills
a. listening -- the ability to distinguish different sounds; strong comprehension skills
b. speaking -- good, strong pronunciation; clear intonation; willingness to communicate orally
c. reading -- average or above average reading ability
d. writing -- average or above average writing skills (ability to develop one's thoughts logically and structurally)

For a 2nd year language course:

1. An average of C (2) in French 1, German 1, or Spanish 1/1B

2. Successful completion of two years of foreign language in middle school program (grade of B (4) or above). The Memorial High School Foreign Language Department may also choose to administer a departmental foreign language entrance exam which will test the four communication skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing along with the grammatical foundation of the student. If the Foreign Language Department chooses to administer the entrance exam, it will be administered by the appropriate member of the foreign language department of Memorial High School at the end of the current school year.
