Expository Writing (2006-07)

Mrs. Schneider

Knowing how to write is a necessary skill that each student must master in order to prepare for any academic or occupational field.

Expository Writing is designed to help students develop their ability to think, to organize, and to express their ideas clearly and effectively. Aside from short lectures, the majority of class time is spent writing. Students are expected to complete all writing assignments and to come to class each day prepared to write.

Materials needed:

  • Two 3 ring binders: one with paper for notes, the other for Senior Memory Book

  • Tabs - I set

  • A diskette or memory stick - almost every assignment will be done several times, so having the essay recorded will save you time and frustration.

  • Hi-Liter - for corrections

  • A Guide to MLA Documentation

  • Novel to be assigned.

Bring all required materials to class daily or points will be deducted.

Absent: If you are absent on class day you must see me the day you return to school. See me before or after school. If you come to class unprepared, I will take one letter grade off the project we are currently working on.
If you are in the building when an assignment is due, regardless if you come to class, your essay is still due. All assignments not collected in class must be submitted to either me or Mrs. Carroll (Room 245).
Do not put assignments in our mailboxes.
I will not discuss make up work during class time.

Policy on late work: The writing assignments must be handed in on the due date that will be assigned and posted on the board. If it is not handed in at this time, the essay is considered late.
When necessary, you may submit a legibly written, double-spaced, single-sided essay. Double the length requirements to compensate for handwriting (ex: a 2 page essay is now 4  pages).
The highest grade you may earn, however, is a 74% (1). I suggest you use the option sparingly. (NO EXCUSES WILL BE ACCEPTED).

Papers:
If you do not turn in two copies of your essay, you will lose 5 pts.

You will be given one LATE PASS. This pass entitles you to turn in one assignment on the next school day by 7:30 am. If I do not have it by this time it is considered late and I will not accept it.

Since we will be working often in the computer lab and I cannot be in two places at one time (my room and the lab) the following policy will apply:  If you are not where you are suppose to be during my class, I will consider that skipping and a two hour detention will be given to you. The penalty will be discussed with the administration.

Bridging Program: The University of Evansville offers 3 hours of credit for this class (Writing 104); you need to check to see if it transfers to the college or university you plan to attend in the fall. The cost for this class is $150 and requires that you earn a 4 or better in the course.

Regardless of if you sign up for the college credit, we will visit UE several times as we work on our research paper. We will walk to the campus together. You will be on your best behavior and use your time wisely. We will discuss the details of these visits as we near research paper time.

Grading: The course grades will be determined by the number of points earned in the course on assignments. Points will be accumulated throughout the course.

Head all essays in the following format, single-spaced:

Due Date
Writing type (persuasive, expository, creative, descriptive, etc.) and draft (1st, 2nd, 3rd)

The semester grade will be determined as follows:

First quarter  40%
Second quarter 40%

Reminder: this credit is required to graduate.   Take this class seriously.

I will not give you the credit unless you earn it!
