CADET TEACHING

The cadet teacher spends each class day working under the supervision of an elementary teacher. The cadet also observes classes at grade level K-6 and completes at least one major project approved by the supervising elementary teacher and the high school advisor.

Course Requirements

A binder is required with the following:  (These are also your tabs)
WORKSHEETS & SMALL PROJECTS, MAJOR PROJECT, OBSERVATIONS and JOURNAL.

Portfolio:
The cadet will compile a portfolio (binder) during the semester. This portfolio should contain examples of projects/work done during their teaching experience.

Worksheets & Small Projects  (5 points each)

Photographs of projects, copied worksheets, etc. should be displayed accompanied by an explanation of the lesson’s objectives. The cadet should also reflect on the success of the lesson and note any future changes to improve overall learning.  A minimum of 8 examples should be in this section.

Possible Activities for Small Projects

  • Help a student prepare a story to read to the class.

  • Assist with reading work or spelling words.

  • Help with individual seatwork.

  • Help students who are having problems with math concepts.

  • Assist with supervised study.

  • Help students who were absent catch up.

  • Plan and put up bulletin boards.

  • Help supervise recess.

  • Correct papers.

  • Makes copies of assignments and other papers.

Major Project:  (50 points)

During the semester, the cadet will plan, prepare, and complete one major project. This activity will be planned under the supervision of the teacher and must have the approval of the advisor. A written explanation and evaluation of the project must be included in the portfolio.

Observations:  (5 points each)

The cadet is required to observe each grade level K-6. The observation should be written in this manner: The entry for an observation should be several paragraphs in length and should include activities taking place in the classroom and the cadet’s reaction to working at that grade level as opposed to the one he/she is assigned.

(There should be a total of seven observations.)

Journal:  (5 points each)

The cadet teacher is to keep a journal of each day’s activities; the entry should be at least one well-developed page describing how the cadet was involved that day.

This will be turned in to the high school advisor on assigned dates.

Make a note in your journal on days you observe other classes or if you were absent.

During the semester, selected articles will be provided to the cadet to be used for group discussion meetings with other cadets and the advisor. One short paper will be written on a current topic in education.

Grading

The advisor will assign the final grade. The classroom teacher will be asked to evaluate the cadet in a narrative form at the end of the semester, listing strengths and weaknesses.

The final nine weeks grade will be based on the following:

Attendance, promptness and supervising teacher input.

Journal/Portfolio (completeness and quality)

Major Project (if it falls during that quarter)

Small Projects and Worksheets.

The final exam will count as 10% of the final grade. The short paper assigned by the advisor will count as half of the final exam and will be a requirement for passing the course.

Since we will meet only on designated SRB periods, it is important for cadets to be in attendance at these meetings. Your attendance is mandatory.
