Summer Opportunities


Juniors and Seniors:  The Ayn Rand Institute offers awards to students who partake in the annual essay contests.  Juniors and Seniors write an 800 – 1600 essay on Ayn Rand’s novel, The Fountainhead.  The entry deadline is an April 25th postmark.  To see rules and guidelines and to submit your essay, go to www.aynrand.org/contests

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship is based on gpa and SAT/ACT scores.  Applications are available in the Counseling Office and online at www.in.gov/ssaci/programs/robert  for Indiana residents.  Applicant deadline is April 26.

Juniors:  The Tri-state Better Business Bureau (BBB) will award three current Juniors a $1,000 scholarship at the BBB’s annual Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics luncheon in October.   The Students of Integrity Essay contest was created to  honor those students who exemplify the principles of ethics through community service, leadership, awards and academics.  Students will be required to submit an essay about an ethical situation that has affected them personally.  Applications must be in the BBB Office no later than April 30.  Application forms are available in the Counseling Office.

The John S. McCullough Memorial Scholarship application is now available in the Counseling Office.  One young man and one young woman from Memorials Class of 2008 will each receive $2,500.  The selection committee is looking for “recipients who are not necessarily the students with the best grades, but students who exhibit spirit and pride for MHS, achieve their maximum potential in academics and strive to be a good member of the MHS community.”  Deadline is receipt in the Counseling Office by April 30.

The Ali Carter Memorial Scholarship is now available in the Counseling Office.  This is a $500.00 non renewable scholarship and can be applied toward tuition, books and fees.  The selection committee will focus on applicants who exhibit spirit, pride and loyalty to Memorial and have demonstrated a commitment to service and have worked to achieve his/her highest potential.  Application deadline is receipt in the Counseling Office by 2:45, Wednesday, April 30.

Seniors:  The Jean Bennett Memorial Scholarship is now available in the Counseling Office.  This is a $300 non-renewable award and may be applied toward tuition, books and fees.  Applicants must have successfully completed a course in Earth Space Science.  The Selection Committee is looking for a recipient who demonstrates an ability to balance the responsibilities of home, work and school and is still able to find ways to contribute positively the MHS community.  Application deadline is receipt in the Counseling Office by 2:45, Wednesday, April 30.

The Diamond Valley Credit Union will award seven $1,000 scholarships to area Seniors.  Applicants do not have to be a member of the Diamond Valley Credit Union, but must be enrolled in a Vanderburgh County high school.  Applications can be found online at www.diamondvalleyfcu.org (click on Community Involvement) and in the Counseling Office.  Application deadline is May 2.

The Casino Aztar will award three $1,000 scholarships – one each for Poster, Essay and Video presentations specifically addressing the subject of deterring under-aged gambling.  Students may enter all three contests or just one.   Submitted essays must have been published in a school news paper (check with the View as far as a publication date), posters must be displayed at MHS for at least a wee and videos must be between 60 seconds and 2 minutes and be played before at least 50 students. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. All entries must be submitted to Casino Aztar’s Human Resources Department no later than May 9th. 

The Greater Indiana Regional League of Soccer has established a college scholarship program for young women who have participated in their league.  Two scholarships are awarded – one in the Spring and one in the Fall.  Applications are available in the Counseling Office and online at www.girlsinsoccer.com.   The Fall application deadline is May 31.  Applicants must be at least Seniors in high school.

The local Tri-Kappa is offering one $700 scholarship to a Senior whose GPA is between 5.0 and 5.98.  Selection of the scholarship recipient will be based on class standing, financial need, strength of high school course of study, grades, activities and honors.   The applicant must live in Vanderburgh County or Newburgh.  Applications are available in the Counseling Office.  The application and other requirements must be postmarked by May 31st.

The Mark Kniese Scholarship is available only to Camp Counselors at YMCA Camp Carson, Princeton, IN who plan to attend an accredited college or university.  They must demonstrate dedication to and rapport with campers, and exhibit the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.  Applications will be available at the beginning of the 2008 summer camp season.

 

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) offers several National Scholarships for students.  .    A local chapter recommendation letter must accompany each application so it is important to allow enough time for the Captain Henry Vanderburgh Chapter Chairperson to supply the letter.   Specific scholarships are available to students planning on such majors as Political Science, History, Government, Econ, Music, Chemistry, Nursing etc. etc.   The Counseling Office has a complete list or visit their website at www.dar.org.  Application deadline for some of these scholarships is as late as August 15.

 

Indiana’s State Student Assistance Commission also offers a Minority Teacher/Special Ed Services Scholarship.  To be eligible, an applicant must be a Black or Hispanic seeking a teaching degree OR seeking a Special Ed degree or Occupational or Physical Therapy.  Applicants must agree in writing to work in an accredited Indiana elementary or high school setting for at least three of the first 5 years after college graduation. The minimum gpa is 3.0/6.0 and can get up to $4,000 annually if financial need is demonstrated.  Specifics and application are available online at www.in.gov/ssaci/programs/m-teach.  The application deadline varies by each Indiana College. 

Indiana’s State Student Assistance Commission offers a Nursing Scholarship.  Applicants must agree in writing to work as a nurse in an Indiana health care setting for at least the first two years after college graduation. The minimum gpa is 3.0/6.0 and must demonstrate financial need.  Specifics and application are available online at www.in.gov/ssaci/programs/nur.  The application deadline varies by each Indiana college.
